I didn't find healthcare. Healthcare found me — in a small two-bedroom home, watching my grandmother put her shoes on the wrong feet.
My family were Italian immigrants. We grew up in poverty. Every day after school I'd go to my grandmother's house. And I started noticing things. Shoes on the wrong feet. Dress on backwards. More and more forgetful every day.
We didn't know who to call. We had no access. So she just continued to decompensate — day after day — until it fell on me, as a young boy, to find her a nursing home. I watched her slowly wither away. I watched the day come when she no longer recognized me.
My uncle lived with her. He suffered from severe, chronic depression his entire life — enduring shock treatments in an era when nobody had language for what he was experiencing. We didn't know what depression was. We just thought he was crazy. He suffered for decades.
Those two people shaped everything that came next.
I spent 15 years on the front lines of behavioral health — restructuring failing programs, leading turnarounds, and co-founding a behavioral health facility. I wasn't studying the system. I was inside it every day, learning exactly where and why it breaks.
Then I stepped back. And I returned to the questions I couldn't stop asking.
55 million people live in neurology deserts. 75% of those with Alzheimer's go undiagnosed. 14 million people have MCI and don't know it. 4 out of 10 PCP referrals to neurologists are false positives. Patients in inner cities and rural communities have no path to early detection.
The answer I kept coming back to: voice AI, speech biomarkers, and digital humans. The only tools capable of reaching anyone, anywhere, in any language — without requiring a specialist, a referral, or an appointment.
